Right-Winger Mostly Succeeds in Complimenting Sean Penn

“Sean Penn is an outstanding director and I’m betting he gets the best performance we’ve seen from Robert De Niro in 15 years. Watching De Niro overact in the tradition of his pal Al Pacino has been more than a little heartbreaking. But Penn was able to direct scenery-chewer Jack Nicholson into one of his best performances in The Pledge, a near-masterpiece everyone should see regardless of your personal feelings about Penn. No doubt, Sean Penn is an asshole, but he’s an asshole capable of telling superb, character-driven stories that stay with you long after the lights come up.” Well, it’s something. Robert De Niro Is The Comedian

A new drama from Sean PennAfter slowly coming together amid rumours about directors and casting choices, scathing drama The Comedian will finally see the light of day with Robert De Niro and Kristen Wiig in the lead roles and Sean Penn behind the camera. The film has been talked about for more than a year, but little was locked in until mentions of Penn directing and De Niro starring began to crop up this past June. Now, De Niro will officially star as an angry comic who is looking to get back to the fame enjoyed playing a popular TV character. Trouble is, he has real rage issues and is sentenced to community service after smacking an annoying audience member in the head with a microphone. But then he meets a woman (Wiig) who brings some happiness into his life.It sounds like a thematic sibling to De Niro's King Of Comedy (albeit a lot less weird and stalkery) and it's good to see Penn back directing. Art Linson, who has worked as a producer with both of them, is behind the script, which he co-wrote with Jeffrey Ross.Penn is aiming to start shooting in the spring.

Around the Set With Person of great interest

Michael Emerson and Jim Caviezel Jim Caviezel is knackered. It comes down to noon, and that he and Person of great interest costar Michael Emerson have just came to the conclusion a gauntlet of satellite interviews at CBS' Midtown Manhattan headquarters. He apologetically struggles under our barrage of questions regarding just what has happened to date the loop-suspense drama and where it's headed. "It is a blur in my experience,Inch he states. "Everything is sensible if you notice it. That's all I will tell you. What's during my mind at this time is attempting to complete the day's work," which in the last week approximately, he states, happen to be 18-hour marathons. "It is a killer." He's only some of the one who's bracing for any lengthy haul. Using the series accumulating impressive rankings within the competitive 9pm Thursday time slot, it appears like CBS includes a hit on its hands. And no surprise. Additionally to Caviezel's and Emerson's star energy, POI is executive created by suspense mastermind J.J. Abrams (Alias, Lost) and includes a premise that's both tantalizingly out-there and strangely contemporary: a publish-9/11 America where an exciting-seeing surveillance behemoth, known as this is the Machine, can view us, hear us and data-mine our skills to recognize risks towards the condition. Additionally, it spits the social security amounts of people that, while considered "irrelevant" for national-security reasons, are predicted to become imminently involved with criminality of some type. Emerson plays Finch, the gazillionaire designer from the Machine who's arrived at regret how his creation has overlooked "irrelevants." He decides to atone for his sin by intervening within the lives from the irrelevants to avoid stated crimes, prospecting Caviezel's Reese, a traumatized former black-operations supersoldier, as his partner. Like a film writer from the Dark Dark night and also the 2006 feature The Prestige, POI creator Jonathan Nolan recognizes that with November sweeps pending, you're ready to start putting some meat around the show's mythological bones and fleshing out his thus-far maddeningly mysterious leads. "I love implies that dangle the large picture forever," he states, "but we actually such as these figures and we are impatient to inform a few of their story." Key phrase: some. After about ten minutes of grilling, Nolan finally confesses: "J.J. has provided us with a listing of items to say in response to these questions." Regrettably, individuals solutions - to questions like, How come Finch limp? Is Harold really his name? What's the personal loss he describes that inspires his campaign? How did Reese's fiancée, Jessica, die? - frequently add up to "stay updated," "possibly" and "we'll see." Fortunately, mid-day finds the development shooting a climactic scene of tonight's episode, entitled "The Fix," among the marble-and-granite grandeur of lower Manhattan's Museum from the American Indian. There, Emerson tries to enlighten us. "We have started to explore backstories for Reese and Finch that will explain their mental motivations," he states, his measured, erudite tones evoking Lost's Benjamin Linus. "We are also beginning to obtain a sense that there can be just a little link between a few of these crimes that they are intervening in, that there can be some ongoing criminal enterprise that may occupy them in excess of a chapter.Inch More great news: This week's narrative involves money-in-the-bank guest star Paige Turco (Damages). She's a shadowy "fixer" who moves among a number of Gotham's criminal subcultures. As Nolan puts it, "She works inside a kind of grey zone, so she and Reese are somewhat intrigued by one another." Intrigued... and smitten? Nolan is only going to reveal, "She ain't going anywhere." Emerson, meanwhile, prepares us for Taraji P. Henson's NYPD detective Carter to loom bigger because the season wears on: "Our two avengers have attracted the interest from the government bodies, so additionally for their vigilante work, they are in possession of to invest more energy staying away from recognition." We learn that November brings an as-yet-uncast archvillain of sorts in to the picture to complicate the duo's mission. Caviezel can't say how effective or connected stated enemy is going to be but, because he puts it, "He's somebody's kryptonite." Through everything, the show's focal point relationship will evolve and deepen, regardless of the pair's laconic, distrustful natures. "With time, you will find little easinesses which are sneaking in," Emerson describes. "There's a type of grudging brotherhood becoming an adult together, like they are two halves of 1 great avenging angel." That connecting, states Caviezel, is going to be especially challenging for Reese. "Something's damaged there," he states of his alter ego, "just like a magnet that you simply can't come up with again. But since the aim of what they are doing is non selfish, they cannot help sometimes admiring each other, liking each other." Nolan, for his part, imagines the happy couple like a latter-day Mulder and Scully. "The X-Files is certainly something we'd in your mind,Inch he confesses, particularly the conditioning from the pair's odd-couple dichotomy. "In approaching episodes you'll notice that line blur a bit. We begin to see Finch undertake a far more active role along with a little bleed from what Finch does. They type of chafe on one another, hopefully in really fun ways." And to date, they are holding individuals interest. Person of great interest airs Thursdays at 9/8c on CBS. 'Paranormal Activity 4' Is All But Guaranteed

"Paranormal Activity 3" rocked the box office last weekend, and it looks like next October we may be able to find out what happened to Katie and Hunter a fourth installment in the supernatural chiller is possibly heading our way. (Duh!) With record-breaking numbers like "PA3's" it's no shocker that Paramount's Don Harris told The Wrap, "I can't imagine that we wouldn't make a number four, and I imagine [Paramount Film Group president] Adam Goodman this morning is thinking about the challenge. I'm sure he's thinking, 'Now what do I do?'" Where do you think they'll take the storyline from here? Ponder that while you hit the jump to read the rest of this week's horror news. Scorsese is Back in the Horror Game with 'The Snowman' The legendary Martin Scorsese dabbled with a little bit of horror when he made last year's "Shutter Island." Now, he's looking toward Norway for some serial crime action with a possible adaptation of "The Snowman." Jo Nesbo's best-selling novel has attracted the attention of the "Goodfellas" maestro, who has always had an eye on the literary world for inspiration. While Scorsese currently closes the book on Paramount's "Hugo," he's circling the Norwegian novel for a possible re-telling. The story which "World War Z" scribe Matthew Michael Carnahan is in talks to adapt takes place in Oslo and concerns a missing woman. The only trace of her left behind is a pink scarf, which has been wrapped around an "ominous-looking" snowman and may be the work of a serial killer. "Black Swan" Team to Create an Online Stalker Flick "Black Swan" writer Mark Heyman just sold his Facebook stalking film to Lionsgate, which boasts director Darren Aronofsky in a producer's capacity. (We guess "Black Swan" likes to keep it in the family.) The script for "XOXO" follows an executive on the rise who spends his free time flirting online. Of course, he ends up courting the wrong woman and things get ugly. As Fangoria points out, the similarities between "Fatal Attraction" and "XOXO" seem obvious so what's really going to separate this movie from every other 1990's Michael Douglas movie we've ever seen? Are you curious? "True Blood" and "Crank" Star Take "Flight 7500" "The Butterfly Effect's" Amy Smart and "True Blood's" Ryan Kwaten are currently in talks to take a trip on "Flight 7500." "The Grudge" director Takashi Shimizu will direct the CBS Films' feature that takes place " on a transpacific airliner from Los Angeles to Tokyo where the passengers encounter what seems to be a supernatural force." Smart would play a passenger trapped amongst the mysterious forces. No word yet on Kwanten's part, but we assume he'll be shirtless for at least a tiny part of the horror-thriller. Teen Creeper Story Features "Saw" Actor/Writer "Saw" and "Insidious" writer/actor Leigh Whannell is joining Caitriona Balfe ("Super 8") for "Crush," which starts shooting this week in L.A. The love-obsession story, which is written by the folks who brought us "The Roommate," stars "X-Men: First Class'" Lucas Till as an athlete who has a secret admirer or should we say stalker. Whannell and Balfe are playing local business owners. Isn't this kind of like "Swimfan"? Will you be lurking all over this one? Fight for Your Life on "Grim Night" Universal Pictures just picked up the rights to "Grim Night" a new "holiday" film that blends the supernatural and apocalyptic panic. "The Strangers" producer Bryan Bertino is behind the tale and a new teaser video, which shows that 90,000 people have died during Grim Night. That's the single night every year when creepy Grim Reapers scour the earth for souls to drag back to hell. Happy, no? Check out the promo clip, and let us know what you think. REVIEW: Shrek Spin-Off Puss in Boots Purrs with Genuine Charm

Following the Shrek series consumed its charm on rote third and 4th payments that nonetheless raked in giant piles of box office gold, the possibilities of a spin-off prequel concentrating on Antonio Banderas’ swashbuckling, shoes-sporting feline appeared as inevitable because it was unpromising. But Puss in Boots, directed by Chris Burns (who also helmed Shrek the 3rd) is really a legitimately entertaining prequel that encapsulates exactly what the franchise does best: Breezy action, clever twists on classic figures from fables and grown-up gags hidden in amongst the little one-friendly developments. (“You got any idea the things they're doing to eggs imprisonment? I’ll let you know this — it ain’t over easy!” the Zach Galifianakis-voiced Humpty Dumpty quavers at some point, within the first prison rape joke I'm able to think about not only to be ended up right into a kiddie flick but additionally outlined within the trailer.) It’s become super easy to think about computer-animated films as falling in to the groups of “Pixar” and “Everything Else,” using the former composed of marvels of art and entertainment and also the latter comprised of 80-minute portions of vibrant colors, retailing possibilities and outdated popular culture references. But as Cars 2 indicates, not really Pixar could be Pixar constantly, and flicks like Rango and Puss in Boots give a satisfying indication that mainstream animation has the ability to get past the lucrative niche from the joylessly calculated kid movie. It doesn’t hurt that Puss in Boots has got the participation of Guillermo del Toro, who can serve as executive producer and offers the voice from the Comandante — the guy could have a lot happening right now, but there’s no questioning his aversion to condescension to audiences and the reverence for favorite anecdotes. It’s those of Jack and also the Beanstalk that delivers the backbone for Puss in Boots’ plot, although the mood is pure spaghetti western. Puss is roped right into a heist by which he and the cohorts will steal the miracle beans from Jack and Jill (Billy Bob Thornton and Amy Sedaris), who’ve been converted into square-shouldered outlaws bickering concerning the proper time to decelerate their careers to be able to possess a baby. The gang expects to plant the enchanted beans within the right place and climb the resulting vine to steal the golden eggs in the giant’s castle (the giant died age range ago, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t still something fierce standing guard). Further complicating this plan of action is always that it had been imagined up by Humpty, an ovoid mastermind who was raised within the same orphanage as Puss, with whom the kitty shares an unsatisfied past. Getting back with Banderas for any non-Robert Rodriguez-brought outing, Salma Hayek offers the voice of Cat Softpaws, the 3rd cohort, a sexy feline crook by having an extra light (and declawed) touch. Usually, the adult and often risqu jokes put into movies such as these, meant to sail within the heads of more youthful audience, possess the tone of the apology, a bone tossed to bored parents. The periodic wink here — there’s a medicinal marijuana crack — appears a bit more naughty and good-humored, as though the designers truly couldn’t help themselves. Not too the film demands such credits: Puss in Boots doesn’t have and doesn’t shoot for the soul of the Pixar film, but will get pleasure enough from its very own figures and exactly how they undertake this cleverly recognized world. Humpty, for example, his petulant features arranged in the heart of his mind/torso, struggles using the restrictions of the egg-formed body, including how difficult it may be to obtain up once you have were built with a great fall. Puss and the love interest Cat have touchable-searching fur of assorted length and texture, and relocate a directing mixture of lithe human as well as lither cat ways, at some point engaging in a dance competition which brings in aspects of flamenco and poop scooting. The eruption from the beanstalk in to the stratosphere and also the trio’s bouncing around around the clouds upon arrival offers the film’s highlight, not only when it comes to the good thing about its pictures but due to the physicality that complements them. The figures cling towards the plant through its like magic faster growth spurt, grappling with leaves and ricocheting off stems, plus they never display the weightlessness than can continue to affect this kind of animation and splinter its manufactured reality. Puss in Boots further plays to the strong points by placing a persons figures without anyone's knowledge, except for Jack and Jill, who look a lot more like caricatures than people. The film models a long flashback and it is central thievery and completes its tale of unfaithfulness and forgiveness by coming back towards the small capital of scotland - San Ricardo, scene of Puss’ shame and the ultimate redemption. It might not bring a tear for your eye, however it won’t make you feel scammed or spoken lower to, even if the p rigueur credits dance number appears. There’s nary a look and feel from an ogre, with no Donkey, either — that, I’m speculating, is really a spin-off for an additional day.

Benicio Del Toro, Others Linked to Outcry Over Academy's 'Discriminatory' Puerto Rico Ban

Benicio Del Toro, Jimmy Smits and Esai Morales are among the stars named in a protest of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ new rule to block Puerto Rico from competing in the Foreign-Language Oscar race. Their concerns were made public this morning in a press release distributed by Puerto Rican producer Frances Lausell, who said that the Academy rejected her film America from submission after last year’s decision to exclude the U.S. territory from the running. At the time, AMPAS executive director Bruce Davis explained the rationale in a letter to the Puerto Rico Film Commission [PDF here]: We are aware of course that few issues present as much complexity as the determination of Puerto Rico’s political status. Past Academy committees have tended to sidestep the issue, or to conclude that Puerto Rico was near enough to being a sovereign nation to warrant inclusion in the Foreign Language competition. That view has now been abandoned. The current committee, working from the fact that Puerto Rican artists are U.S. citizens, has ruled that in allowing them to compete in this particular category, the Academy would open itself to the same suspicion of favoritism that we have been at pains to avoid with respect to filmmakers based in the fifty states. On the one hand, the committee is consistent: Just a few weeks ago it ruled Albania’s entry, The Forgiveness of Blood, ineligible because of “crew composition” that included American director Joshua Marston (who’d been through this previously with his acclaimed Maria Full of Grace). This came despite Blood’s Albanian language dialogue, co-written by native scribe Andamion Murataj. On the other hand, as Marston alluded when the decision came down, the committee is vague and more than a little myopic. Citing Rule 14 of the Oscars (“A foreign-language film is defined as a feature-length motion picture produced outside the United States of America with a predominantly non-English dialogue track”), Puerto Rico Film Commissioner Mariella Perez Serrano argued further this month in a letter to AMPAS [PDF here]: This provision does not require that the producers, the director, or any member of the cast or crew must be a non-US citizen. In order [sic] words, the criterion for this category is not who makes the film, but where it is produced and the language of the dialogue track. Therefore, the films made in Puerto Rico can be eligible under the regulations for the Foreign Language Film category because they are produced outside the United States and provided they have a predominantly non-English dialogue track. Only 11 Puerto Rican films have ever been submitted to the Academy for consideration, with just one — the 1990 effort Lo que le pas a Santiago — earning a Best Foreign Language Film nomination. (It lost to Cinema Paradiso.) Nevertheless, Lausell has a petition up and running at RecognizePuertoRico.com, invoking various screen imprimaturs of Puerto Rican heritage in a campaign to reverse the Academy’s “offensive” ruling: The decision is incorrect on many levels, as even our production company is considered a foreign corporation for tax and legal purposes, because it’s registered to do business in Puerto Rico. […] I understand the Academy was lead to make an uninformed decision that could wrongly portray it as a discriminatory entity against Latinos and Puerto Ricans. I just want to help them make the right decision based on all the facts. Fair enough. 'Ashton Kutcher is the King of Commitment,' and 8 Other Revelations From The Double Star Topher Grace

In the upcoming political thriller The Double, Topher Grace and Richard Gere star as an unlikely duo of intelligence agents paired to solve the mystery of a senator’s murder. The twisty plot leads them through a trail involving a psychopathic Soviet assassin (Stephen Moyer), Shakespearean code names and one double (get it) identity that culminates with a surprising ending in screenwriter Michael Brandt’s (3:10 to Yuma, Wanted) directorial debut. To promote the film — due in theaters this Friday — Topher Grace met with a handful of journalists in Beverly Hills yesterday to discuss, among other things, Richard Gere’s incredible calmness, the state of his relationship with the ’70s Show cast and to make one unfortunately ironic statement about his friend and former co-star Ashton Kutcher. Revelations ahead! 1. Babies hate Topher Grace. [While discussing some of the things he learned while preparing for this role.] “And then there was holding a baby — [that] was the scariest of all the things. I don’t think I mastered that. Odette was so good with the kid and then she’d pass it to me and it would just start crying. I never held a baby before. […] It’s twins so that you can swap them out but both babies hated me.” 2. Richard Gere prays for fallen insects. “He’s really zen, man. The rumors are true. We were at this dinner and it was me, Odette and him in this scene where we’re having dinner. There are bugs all over the place and I’m [smacks imaginary bugs all over his body] and I look over [at Richard] and am like, ‘Oh, sorry.’ He’s friends with the Dalai Lama and stuff. He says, ‘Don’t worry, I’m saying a prayer for each [mosquito you kill].’” 3. Speaking of Richard Gere, the actor is also cool with you sucking blood from his face. “Then, during the scene, and this was incredible and shows what a great guy he is — it bleeds into his roles how unflappable he is. This mosquito landed and was pumping blood out of his cheek. […] It had been awhile and this mosquito is getting fat with blood. And he finally said, ‘There’s a mosquito on my cheek, huh?’ And he lifted it [mimes gently lifting a mosquito off his cheek and tossing it into the air] and said, ‘Enjoy the snack.’ It’s crazy. I was blown away by that kind of stillness.” 4. Topher Grace finds adultery-related greeting card gags funny — but also in bad taste. “I have this family portrait that’s in the film [of him, Odette and their movie children] that I put in my office at home. I told Odette that I was going to send it out as our Christmas card. [Laughs] She just got married by the way so that would have been in really bad taste.” 5. Yes, the ’70s Show alum has slept in a bunk bed in the past year. [Responding to a question about The Wedding, which he filmed with Diane Keaton, Robert De Niro and Katherine Heigl last summer:] “It was shot in my hometown. That was just a coincidence but my folks still live there and I slept in my bunk bed from when I was twelve.” 6. He calls Katherine Heigl ‘Katie.’ [Describing The Wedding, due in theaters next year] “Diane [Keaton] and Robert De Niro are my and Katie Heigl’s folks. Susan Sarandon and Robin Williams are kind of the stepparents.” 7. Topher has a gift for making incredibly ironic statements about Ashton Kutcher, given the media storm surrounding his supposed affair. [When asked if he was surprised that his ’70s Show castmates have gone on to enjoy such successful careers] “It strikes me that I’ve had work after the show. That is amazing. But I knew their talent — better than a lot of people who were just watching the show because I was with them every day. I’m not surprised at all. Ashton is the king of commitment. If you give him something, he will commit to it. I saw him be given some ridiculous things and he commits to it so much it becomes real and really good.” 8. The ’70s Show cast still hangs out. “[Mila] just went to Laura Prepon’s sitcom taping. She was also doing a Chelsea Handler show and I went with Wilmer [Valderrama], who’s also doing a show on NBC. Then we went next door and visited Ashton. We were all standing there like, ‘Whoa.’ We’re all those cliches. We’re really close and we all love each other. “ 9. Topher Grace is not motivated by motivational speakers. [While discussing his preparation for the role of a motivational speaker in the upcoming Giant Mechanical Man] “It was depressing. It motivated me to make fun of them. I can’t wait to do press for that because I feel like I have so much to say about that. What makes one human being stand up and tell other human beings how to be living their life?” Follow Julie Miller on Twitter. Follow Movieline on Twitter.

Prepare to start seeing really Kim Bubbs. The Canadian-born actress appears by 50 percent lengthy looked forward to films set striking the silver screen soon: this week's release 'The Factor,' which works like a prequel to John Carpenter's 1982 cult classic of the title, and 'On the road.A Bubbs stars alongside Garrett Hedlund, Mike Riley and Bella herself, Billy Burke, in 'On the road,An account balance buzzed-about adaptation of Jack Kerouac's famous novel. Moviefone taken up while using budding star to uncover a little more about 'The Thing' and exactly what it was like coping with Hedlund in 'On the road.A What sparked your fascination with 'The Thing' initially? I believed it might be an excellent idea to prequel John Carpenter's film. 'The Thing' provided a good chance to determine which went lower within the Norwegian base as it is shrouded in mystery. We don't understand specifically what went down there. Which I loved the fact there has been two women for the reason that one. How managed to get happen customize the dynamic while filming, getting another lady round the team? We'd an enjoyable experience. Mary Elizabeth [Winstead, of 'Scott Pilgrim versus The World'] is amazing. She's so professional and gifted. We'd such an enjoyable experience becoming an ensemble cast too. Everybody got along. It felt as being similar to camping. How can this compare and lead into John Carpenter's version? Well, there's plenty of care taken using this film because Carpenter's version can be a cult classic which we preferred to respect that. The results were done by hand and there's plenty of puppetry in Carpenter's version, which element is at this film, that's great. Our film and also the are extremely within the same world. Although it's got exactly the same type of feel, it is also a film that could really uphold itself. This means you will attract an audience beyond original fans of 'The Thing'? Oh, absolutely! One factor that's interesting will be the facets of paranoia, isolation, unsure who to trust -- that whole mental element is really intriguing, notable and compelling to check out. The thing that was it like shooting? I heard you'd a significant elaborate occur Toronto... Yeah, it absolutely was amazing. It absolutely was so impressive to find out everything the results team did. We did some use eco-friendly screens, quite a few the puppets as well as the stuff was on set, so that it actually was awesome to activate from it and discover all the artistry behind it. Without giving a lot of away, is it possible to describe the puppetry just a little many the sorts of effects expect to find out? The creature must appear sensible for films, so you will observe some parallels between certain creatures. How perhaps you have try 'On the Road'? That appears just like a awesome project. Yes! It's a really awesome project, which is a complete departure from 'The Factor.' It's based on Jack Kerouac's famous book, and shot in seven locations all over the world. Because film I play Sal Paradise's -- carried out by Mike Riley -- real, true lady. Within the finish of his adventures he decides to change his existence and settle lower with Laura, who's my character. Great cast. The director is Walter Salles, who directed 'The Motorcycle Journals.' In my opinion it'll be a really exciting project being launched next season. You will discover plenty of large names inside the movie, like Billy Burke and Garrett Hedlund. The thing that was the dynamic like on set? Nearly all my moments were with Garrett Hedlund and Mike Riley, that are fantastic. They're amazing. This is often a film that really as well as around, like the book. The funny part is always that shooting 'The Factor,' i had been wearing snowpants in May, June, which i was boiling. Then shooting 'On the Road' it absolutely was December which i reaches a bustier ball gown. It absolutely was quite funny. Follow Moviefone on Twitter Like Moviefone on Facebook RELATED
